I flipped it over. The back of the card said, in ballpoint: Rachel, I’m interested, call me anytime.

I turned the card over, and over again. Rachel, I’m interested. I found a pen and copied the dealer’s name and number. Now I had to see Eve. I closed and locked the drawers. I stepped back outside.

The West Fork murmured quietly through the deep, still coulee. Cattle sighed in the barn below. I heard Borntrager move beneath me into a far corner of the barn. A door closed and water ran. It was just dark-thirty.

And she was blocking my way down the stairs: Eve’s big sister, Abe Borntrager’s model, Salt Box’s wife … Rachel Kussmaul.
